Apple Ber In Jammu…Dr C M Seth IFS
Two years back I brought three grafted plants of Apple Ber from one of the nurseries in Baroda Gujarat. This year all the three plants are in fruits. I never imagined that within two years these plants will be fruiting so profusely that there are less number of leaves but more number of fruits. Horticulture department in Jammu is totally without any initiative, innovations and ideas. None of the nurseries in Jammu have grafted Ber seedlings. Ber can grow successfully in Kandi areas of Jammu. There are wild varieties as well as very old trees of grafted Ber in some of the villages, which are either diseased or malformed. There is no technical support from the Horticulture department. Thousand of acres of agriculture land is lying idle with virtually no production. These wasted lands in Kandi areas can be used for high yielding varieties of some of the Horticulture species like this Apple Ber. In market its rate is from Rs. 50 to Rs.80 a Kg. In Gujarat and Rajasthan thousands of acre have been planted with this variety of Ber. Few year back I tried Chinese Apple Pear in my garden and every year tree produces about 150 to two hundred pears. I request Horticulture officers in Jammu to help the poor Kandi Farmers to increase the productivity of their wasted lands by planting such new species. Horticulture department should have tree introduction nursery for field trials and introduction of better tropical fruit species from other countries like China, Thailand, Japan and other SE Asians countries.
